Details of task: Assessment 3 is an academic paper on linguistic repertoires and globalisation. The foundation of this assessment is Buschs poststructuralist approach outlined in Busch (2012) and Busch (2015), explored in week 8 of the unit. In her work, Busch delineates how language repertoires can be empirically studied via a multimodal, biographical approach which makes use of a language portrait. As demonstrated in her work, language portraits attempt to facilitate an understanding of how individuals both conceive of and represent their heteroglossic repertoires, particularly against the backdrop of the enhanced mobility, migration and transnational communication characterising contemporary globalisation.
In your assessment, you, too, should study linguistic repertoires, via a case study where you elicit the language portraits of three bi- or multilingual individuals in Melbourne. When conducting your interviews, remember to jot down information about your interviewees, and to take notes (with consent) or audio recordings (with consent) of your interviewees’ presentation of their language portrait. Remember, you need to be very precise if you choose to take notes, as you need to observe not only what your interviewee says, but also write down examples of how s/he says things. Follow the methodology outlined in Busch (2012, 2015), taking note of how she collected the data, and how she moved from data collection to analysis. Attempt then to analyse the data by reflecting on issues of identity and ideology in connection with globalisation. Since you will be conducting your interviews in Melbourne remember to take into account the sociolinguistic situation of Melbourne and if you are focusing on three individuals who belong to the same church, for example, the sociolinguistic situation of the church as a whole. See the folder Additional readings assessment 3 for additional literature to help you conduct your research. You need to work with at least 6 references, and you are expected to also go beyond the course readings when conducting your research. Think carefully about who to choose to interview so as to make the data comparable; and do not choose fellow classmates. Remember you need to choose bi- or multilingual individuals.
