“Resource Management” Please respond to the following:
Select a goods-producing organization and a service-providing organization of your choice. Suggest ways each organization can make aggregate planning decisions using the variables described in Exhibit 13.3 (Chapter 13).
A goods-producing organization that I would choose to discuss would be Dell computers. Dell would definitely have to make aggregate planning decisions based on the manufacturing process of their products. Pricing strategies would have to be thought about and implemented in order to stay competitive. Production rate would have to be looked at to determine if any overtime would be needed, or if some process would be better off outsourced instead of made in house. The workforce is probably next to determine if you have the right amount of employees for the workload that you have. When dealing with aggregate planning you would need to make the hard decisions to determine if any layoffs need to be made as well due to down production. Inventory would be the next planning detail to look at. Safety stock as well as building inventory of addition parts that help make the regular parts are important to consider. The next large planning detail would be to consider any facilities equipment. This involves the operation hours of the business as well as any tooling or parts that may be used to complete any work or projects. An example of a service-providing organization would be the U.S. Postal service. The postal service would aggregate plan a little differently. They would look at production rate as as an importance. This would involve making sure overtime was available to employee to get the job done. Especially during the holidays or other peak times. The workforce is always key to the postal service. Outside of the peak seasons, work can be slow and layoffs have to be made. The final part of aggregate planning for postal service would be facilities and equipment planning. Making sure there are enough truck on the road and facilities in operation to cover all postal needs is critical.
Compare and contrast the operational and managerial impacts of the aggregate planning decisions in terms of customer satisfaction.
I believe the aggregate planning decisions can both have good and bad effects on a business. The good, you can potentially put your company in a position to get ahead of any inventory, personnel, and facility management issues that could arise. That is not to say that things won’t happen, but you can help your company get in position to be ahead of the game. The bad is you can over plan. You can plan to have a good year financially and it turns out your numbers can be down. Now you have put your company in a position to have to cut back on employees, purchases, and inventory. Both situation have an affect on your customer satisfaction. Planning can possibly improve customer satisfaction and give your customers insight that the company has made plans for future business.
