Task:
Assignment task
To give a 20-minute presentation, including 5 minutes question time, which demonstrates that you understand the different components of assessing health needs in a population.
You should consider one disease (e.g. bowel cancer, heart disease) and within a particular setting (e.g.district, region, nation). Using information from the literature, publications and/or databases, this assignment should cover the following elements:
1. Outline the disease condition you are focusing on and the setting.
2. Describe, summarise and interpret the needs of your chosen population with regard to the condition you have chosen using epidemiological, quantitative and/or qualitative data. For example, how common is it, who does it affect, what are the variations across different groups in disease burden, risk factors, access to services, what are the public/service users identified needs, experiences and/or concerns. You may need to extrapolate from data/literature available on similar populations.
3. Describe one strategy/intervention that could be or is implemented within your chosen setting and explain how it reduces the burden of this condition/disease and/or reduce inequalities for this condition. Provide evidence from the literature of the effectiveness of this intervention.
4. Briefly outline what actions would need to be undertaken, and by whom, in order to implement the intervention described in section 3 in your setting. The actions may be at local, national, community, professional and/or organisational level. Students need to support their work with evidence from the literature, publications or appropriate websites. They should use primary sources of data and/or literature and reference these as appropriate in the presentation and, if submitted, written summary.
A list of references should be provided at the end of the presentation. Referencing style should be as described in the School of Health Referencing Guide.
