This assessment requires you to orally and visually present your plan of the organisation, ideas and references for your final essay in the form of a PowerPoint. Your 10 slidesshould include the following: Slide 1: Provide your name and title, clearly indicating your chosen scenario; Slide 2: Provide an orientation (background) to your chosen scenario; Slide 3: Provide a relevant definition of sustainability that reflects the issues and potential responses in your chosen scenario; Slide 4: Provide a draft thesis statement (overall argument) for your essay in one or two sentences; Slide 5: Include a graphic (visual) representation of your essay plan. This can be either a taxonomy or visual outline, providing it is clear and accurate; Slides 6, 7 & 8: Explain the specific sustainability issues related to your chosen scenario in terms of environmental, social and economic points of view, and briefly indicate responses that could help achieve sustainability and could be argued for. Allow one slide per pillar, connecting the issues and responses directly to your taxonomy or visual outline of the essay; Slide 9: In formal bibliographic style, list the most relevant publications that you have found. Explain why and how they relate to each pillar and/or your thesis statement; Slide 10: Conclude your presentation by reflecting on the progress of your essay so far. This slide may also indicate any questions you are still considering or further research that you still need to do. Page 2 of 3 NB: This is not a final plan so we dont expect you to have covered everything you will discuss in your final essay, but we do expect that at this stage you will have decided on most of the key ideas (topics and sub-topics) that your essay will cover. EXTERNAL STUDENTS: Record your voice (as though you are presenting to an audience) and embed the audio within your PowerPoint slides. ALL STUDENTS: Provide a written version of your script (spoken presentation) as part of your submission. This needs to be in the speaker notes section below each slide. Points to consider for Assessment 3: Read the task description carefully, so you include all the information required; Select a design template to ensure that your slides appear consistent in look and feel; Select appropriate images that portray your slides message and purpose. For images that you use, reference each with its own web address directly under the image; not in your slide that shows references of publications (Working Bibliography, slide 9); Practice your speech before recording your voice (external students) and carefully check that your recording is audible; Talk/present to an audience: o In an engaging way varying your tone and adding suitable emphasis to certain words; maintaining eye contact and using body language (internal students); o Making slides readable and attractive from a distance (minimum 24 point font); o Keeping slides uncluttered using bullet points rather than full sentences; o Not reading off the slides, but only using them to support what you are saying; o Using an academic tone not colloquial language. Over the page is an example that shows what we would expect you to cover in your essay plan on slide 5. Notice that we havent included details (ideas and references) that relate specifically to any essay which we would expect you to include. You will need to present your plan as a taxonomy, like in the example, or alternatively as a hierarchy of points/ arguments/ ideas down the slide (using headings and sub-headings).
