Assessment 2A: Interview NOTE Assessment 2 is in three parts (2A, 2B, 2C). While each part is assessed and marked separately, they interconnect as a holistic learning exercise encompassing all Learning Outcomes for this Unit. Students are advised to commence this Assessment at the start of the Unit in order to meet the submission deadlines. Overview Identify a person, aged 65 years or older, and with their permission, undertake a health interview using the Healthy Ageing Quiz. When selecting the person to interview, they: must not be someone with whom you have a professional relationship; may be your close relative, or a relative of a friend; may be a family friend; may be someone you know through a social club, church or sport; must be available for a face-to-face interview, ie. NOT via phone or internet connection (eg. Skype). Be aware that by agreeing to this interview, the person is granting you a great privilege and you must be respectful of this privilege at all times. You must not divulge any detailed information verbally, or in your writing, that may identify this person or imply judgement of them. You may use their first name, relationship to you, their age and other general information. Consideration must be given to the tolerance of the person interviewed. The interview must not be longer than an hour. However, if you need more time and the person agrees, then another hour can be scheduled. Up to a total of two (2) hours only, is permitted to complete this interview. During the interview you will holistically assess: the persons environment and their general health (by observation NOT physical assessment). You will use the Healthy Ageing Quiz to assess their health and well-being as the basis for your analysis (Assessment Task 2B) and for developing a person-centred, strengths-based intervention (Assessment task 2C). You are NOT to undertake a formal physical assessment, or provide health/social advice at any time. You should direct the person to an appropriate information source, for example their GP. Do not pass any information on to a family member even if asked. A report style format (with headings) is recommended for this part of the assessment. How to do the interview To help you with this assessment, the following steps are recommended: Selecting your interviewee 1. Identify your interviewee using the directions above. You could, for example, ask the 70 year old daughter of your 90 year old patient and arrange to meet before/after your shift. From experience, many students access suitable interviewees through social groups, such as their church. 2. Start a conversation with a suitable person about your studies and that you are required to do an assignment involving an interview with an older adult. 3. If they seem interested, read through the Information Sheet_Interviewee Copy with them or arrange a mutually suitable time to meet and do the interview. 4. The Information Sheet/s must be completed before you start the interview. 5. The meeting place should be somewhere quiet but do not meet at the interviewees home unless you are comfortable with the situation. Take to the interview A pen, two copies of the Healthy Ageing Quiz, a copy of the Information Sheet_ Student Copy and the Information Sheet-Interviewee_Copy (consent), writing paper and/or recording device (phone). A tape measure: ask the interviewee to take their waist circumference with assistance from you only if necessary. A copy of your own Quiz results. Documents to take with you to the interview Healthy Ageing Quiz PDF (print 2 copies) Information Sheet_Interviewee Copy Information Sheet_Student Copy Conducting the interview and quiz Make sure you are familiar with the Quiz (do it for yourself) and Information Sheets before you start the interview. Have some questions in your mind if the conversation stalls. The focus of the interview should be on the interviewees experience of ageing; what they do now to stay healthy; what they believe is healthy for them; what helps and what hinders their goals. It is up to you how you conduct the interview and the way you elicit information. You may choose to start with the Quiz or start with some questions that will help you understand healthy ageing from your interviewees perspective first. You can do the Quiz with the interviewee or let them do it unaided. You will need to make a copy for your assignment by transcribing the results onto another blank Quiz or writing the results onto another piece of paper. Discuss the results together. Has doing the Quiz changed anything for the interviewee? Are they interested in a particular aspect/s raised by doing the quiz? Keep the interview at the level of a conversation. Make sure the interviewee has their copy of the Quiz and Information Sheet_Interviewee Copy before you finish the interview. Be clear about any agreed follow-up and keep any arrangement agreed to. Writing your report Using the assessment criteria, critically reflect and review the assessment tool and your interview. What do you think/learn (reflect) about doing an assessment of healthy ageing in a non-therapeutic setting? What was the reaction of your interviewee to you and to the Quiz? Focus on the assessment process itself for 2A. You will discuss the key findings in 2B. A report style format (with headings) is recommended for this part of the assessment. The following are suggested headings based on the marking criteria for Assessment Task 2A: Introduction (what this essay is going to tell the reader) Identification of elderly person for interview Consent for interview General characteristics of interviewee Issues arising during the interview Critique of Quiz The ageing process as experienced by the interviewee Conclusion (a summation of essay with 2-3 key points you want the reader to remember). 4. Identify three (3) KEY findings from the interview and Quiz, then provide a well-structured argument that links the significance of these findings for your interviewee with their perception of healthy ageing. How do the perceptions of your interviewee compare with your own perception/s of healthy ageing? Use scholarly literature to inform your analysis of healthy ageing for your interviewee. The analysis should reflect your understanding and application of a person-centred assessment. This assessment is to be written in academic essay style (not a report and no headings). First person may be used when appropriate. 1. In your analysis you describe and critically analyse the ageing process as experienced by the person interviewed: In your analysis you clearly identify three (3) key findings from the interview and Quiz, providing a well-structured argument that links the significance of the findings for your interviewee and their perception of healthy ageing. In your analysis you critically analyse an extensive range of peer reviewed (scholarly) literature supporting & challenging your arguments, ideas and theory. 2. Your analysis reflects your understanding and application of person-centred assessment: You analyse and apply information from scholarly literature to fill self-identified gaps or extend knowledge based on your understanding of person-centred assessment. 3. In your analysis you communicate professionally: Consistently communicate with fluent professional writing with well-structured sentences and paragraphs that are logical and succinct. Consistently adhere to the English conventions. Accurately acknowledge and reference all sources using Harvard referencing, in both the text and the reference list.
