The assignment involves reviewing and analyzing an application of social psychological theories and methods to investigate inequities in policing in Oakland, California. 2) In one of their studies the research team compared police officers language patterns during interactions with White and Black community members using data from the officers body-worn cameras. Use your own words to briefly summarize some of the key differences in how police spoke to White and Black community members.
3) Using the concept of implicit attitudes that was reviewed in the lectures and textbook, briefly explain what these differences in police officers language towards White versus Black community members might indicate about the officers implicit biases.
4) Which type of police stop showed the largest gap in the number of stops for Black versus White community members? Apply the concept of aversive racism to explain why the racial gap might have been largest for this type of police stop.
5) Eberhards research team recommended a number of policies that the police might implement to improve their relations with communities and reduce racial disparities in police treatment. One of their recommendations involves promoting out-of-uniform social interactions with members of the Black community and involvement in community building projects that might give officers the opportunity to interact with community members who are doing positive work in their communities. Drawing on the material on implicit attitudes that was reviewed in the lectures and textbook, briefly explain how such activities might help to change police officers implicit attitudes towards Black community members.
