Response to the DQ: The term policy refers to a standard set of principles that guide a course of action (McGinty, Porter, & Rutkow, 2018). Nurses are always around in any healthcare settings such as in hospitals, community, long-term care facilities and acquire unique role in formulating policy that impact quality of life and universal access to care. It is imperative to have knowledge about existing policies in order to identify, address change and challenges. Policies are vitally important in setting plan of action to guide desirable outcomes and set to fundamental guidelines to make decisions. Moreover, policies can also be a bridge of communications to help nurses, employers and policy makers to plan, build and set desirable outcomes for safe and cost-effective quality care. Developing a policy is complex, comprehensive process and use a wide variety of stakeholders. A policy which is deliberately studied and evidence-based, ensures its effectivity on health system change that creates a supportive environment to enable people to lead healthy lives (Public Health Ontario, 2018).
