T- Grandma is considered a hypocrite for her being a dishonesty woman.

E- Grandma is a reason as to why the her family was in trouble: “The thought was so embarrassing that she [turn] red in the face and her eyes [dilate] and her feet [jump] up, setting her valise in the corner[…] The grandmother was [curl] under the dashboard, hoping she was injured so that bailey’s wrath would not come down on her all at once. The horrible thought she [have] [have] before the accident was that the house she had [remember] so vividly was not in Georgia but in Tennessee” (O’Connor 521).

A – If Grandma was honest, her family would have been safe. Her lying caused her family to get into a wreck.

L- Grandma wants to be injured so that she would not be blamed for the lie she told.

E- Pointer adds drama to the story by stating “And you needn’t to think you’ll catch me because Pointer [is not] really my name. I use a different name at every house. I call at and [do not] stay anywhere long” (O’Connor 540).

A- Manley pretend to be a good Christian man who sold bible books.

L- He lies about being sick and being an honest man. He is far worse than what he said he is.

T- Manley Pointer uses religion to manipulate Hulga. He constantly asks her to show him her leg and she does.

E- Pointer adds suspense to the story “He leaned the other way and [pull] the valise toward him and [open] it. It had a pale blue spotted lining and there were only two bibles in it. He took one of these out and [open] the cover of it. It was hollow and [contain] a pocket flask of whiskey, a pack of cards, and a small blue box with printing on it. He laid these out in front of her one at a time in an evenly spaced row, like one presenting offerings at the shrine of a goddess. He put the blue box in her hand. THIS PRODUCT TO BE USED ONLY FOR THE PREVENTION OF DISEASE” (O’Connor 539).

A- Hulga believes that Pointer was a good person and she wants to show him every side of who she was.

L – When she discovers that he is not who he said he was, she feels afraid and embarrassed for believing him.

T- In addition, Pointer continues to manipulate Hulga.

E- Manley tells Hulga that he has manipulated other customers:” ‘I’ve gotten a lot of interesting things […] One time I got a woman’s glass eye this way […] You [are not] so smart” (O’Connor 540).

A- Pointer’s hypocrisy caused Hulga to lose something that she depends on.

L- Without her leg, Hulga is left in the dark and embarrassed of how she was tricked.
