“Emotional intelligence describes the ability, capacity, skill, or self-perceived ability to
identify, assess, and manage the emotions of oneself, others, and groups” (Serrat, 2017,
p. 329). High emotional intelligence individuals have a deep understanding of their own
emotions as well as the emotions of others. People can improve career productivity and
the success of themselves and others by increasing their emotional intelligence (Serrat,
2017). Emotional intelligence, on a personal level, helps you connect with your emotions
and make the best decisions for you (Segal et al., 2023). On a social level, emotional
intelligence can help you build strong relationships, improve work performance, and
promote goal achievement (Segal et al., 2023).

Emotional Intelligence has four main components: self-awareness, self-management,
social awareness, and relationship management (Landry, 2019). Self-awareness is the
foundation upon which everything is built. Your self-awareness reflects how well you
understand your strengths and weaknesses and how capable you are of recognizing your
emotions and their effect on yourself and others (Landry, 2019). Self-management is
your ability to manage your emotions and how you react in stressful or emotional
situations (Landry, 2019). Social awareness is the ability to recognize and understand
others’ emotions (Landry, 2019). Last, relationship management involves coaching and
mentoring others (Landry, 2019). Though it is difficult and uncomfortable for most
people, having tough conversations is necessary.

I have attended a few trainings and briefings on emotional intelligence. I was aware of
my emotional intelligence level previous to taking the quiz. I find emotional intelligence
extremely interesting, so I am always up for becoming more aware of how to improve.

I hope to continue working with victims of sexual harassment and assault as I move
through my career, so emotional intelligence is vitally important. Those who are dealing
with trauma do not always show how they are feeling in the ways that we would expect,
so looking past what I see and hear and understanding the emotions that victims are
working through will be essential. Emotional intelligence will also help me deal with my
coworkers and leadership. I work with the Army, so many times, difficult emotions are
not outwardly expressed, or they are overly expressed in a negative manner. I want to
use my knowledge of emotional intelligence to build better relationships with those I
work with.

To improve my emotional intelligence, I will attend training on the subject and remain
self-aware of the need for ongoing reflection. These professional development resources

your emotional intelligence.

Discussion 2 (Raymond)

Emotional Intelligence and IQ coincides with each other and are very important to our
human makeup, {Cherry, 2023}. Emotional intelligence is the ability to work with others
and can comprehend and process while using your own emotions to form relationships
so that everything will go relatively smooth and accomplishing everything {goals} are met
while interacting with others.

I never thought about my EQ [emotional intelligence} until reading this chapter and
was amazed that I need to pay more attention to this so I can interact with others and
establish a better relationship. As I stated previously if someone was to ask me about EQ
I would have to guess as to what they were asking knowing that intelligence is
knowledge but to put it together would of taken a little time to respond. Now that I
know exactly what it means I can say that I do not struggle with forming relationships
with others and as a result my interaction with others are relatively good.

There are still areas of this {EQ} I need to pay attention to being that old habits are
hard to break and can be very challenging but with determination that can be an
accomplished. My EQ will continue to be an important part of my future in human
services being that it involves emphasizing with others and the ability to work with
people with genuine care and concern.

Within the test it stated my key needs are being expressed but more work can be
done, and I agree with that statement. I express my needs to a certain extent but as I
stated I could do more to get better and that is what I will continue to work on as my job
entails working within groups to ensure that others placed under my care are receiving
the best of me while deciding their future endeavors within a group setting.
