1. I believe the Demographic Transition Model to be more accurate than Malthus’s Population Theory. Advances in productivity that did not yet occur when Thomas Malthus was living allowed for the population to fluctuate in a manner that disproves his theory. Mathus believed that it was inevitable that population would always outgrow food supply, leading to famine among people with fewer resources (Roser, 2020). While it is true that impoverished people sometimes have to do without in modern times, there is also a surplus in food supply in America. Advancements in farming, transporting goods, and preserving food have greatly increased our food supply.

The Demographic Transition Model is a more accurate depiction of population trends after the Industrial Revolution.

As population and industry grow, it is important to maintain balance with the environment. Green spaces must be protected and/or created. The Environmental Protection Agency helps to ensure companies are minimizing their impact on the environment. Efforts need to be made to house the growing human population with minimal disruption to native species.

Nurses can advocate for and provide education regarding responsible sexual behavior to their patients. Ensuring young people know about proper contraception usage can help limit unwanted pregnancies. On the other end of the life spectrum, advocating for suffering, terminally ill patients to make informed decisions regarding end of life is the responsible thing to do. Helping the family and patient make the difficult decision to enter DNR status prevents the patient from artificially prolonging life, freeing up resources.

There is a connection between population growth and the area’s socioeconomic status, gender, race/ethnicity, and health outcomes. Lower socioeconomic status can directly affect population growth because of lack of education in regard to family planning (McMaughan, Oloruntoba, Smith, 2020). This would in turn raise the area’s population, leading to a strain on the area’s resources. A strain on resources could lead to food scarcity.  Another factor would be gender. In certain cultures, education for women is not a priority and they focus on more traditional roles for women, such as becoming a mother. This would lead to higher birth rates in those areas. Racial and ethnic groups may experience health disparities which can in turn affect population growth. Some of these disparities include adequate access to healthcare. Insurance coverage, healthcare facilities in the area, and then needing transportation can all affect these patients from getting the care they need. Not having access to healthcare can affect birth and mortality rates, in turn affecting population growth (Komu, 2021). Health outcomes directly affect population growth such as fertility rates, mortality rates, and life expectancy. Inadequate access to contraception will increase fertility rates which will then increase population. Communities with adequate healthcare will have a longer life expectancy, increasing population statistics. Another health outcome that will increase population growth is public health interventions. This includes vaccine clinics, health education initiatives, and disease prevention programs.

Population growth directly affects the environment by depleting resources and climate change. Water scarcity, food scarcity, and deforestation are results of overpopulation (Singh et. al, 2019). Climate change is another result of overpopulation. This happens when greenhouse gases increase from use of emissions. Nurses can help with population growth by participating in public health interventions, patient education, and being active in healthcare reform. Educating the community on family planning and reproductive health will help with population growth. Patients may not have anyone in their life to help guide them so nurses may be their only source for health education.
