Hum Ecology & Environment w4 peers resp

Your responses should consist of your informed input. One or two-sentence peer responses will not fetch full points. Do not merely recite the content you read in the unit; don’t simply give your opinion.

Your input should be in your own words (to avoid plagiarism), demonstrating your understanding and comprehension of the topic. Be sure to support all your posts (initial post + responses) with specific references to the assigned readings, lecture material, and other relevant research you find appropriate in APA format.

Empathy to me is the ability to understand and feel for someone or something. I do not believe that it is to feel the same emotion as that person or being but to emotionally understand what that being is feeling and having that ability to feel bad or good for that being based on what they are feeling. I believe that absolutely our natural environment deserves empathy. The reasoning for feeling this way is that just because a being is not human, does not mean that they do not deserve emotion. Animals have feelings and emotions just as humans do and if we do not have empathy towards plants, animals, and microscopic organisms, we cannot grow as a species. Plants are the beginning of our food chain and without having empathy for things like deforestation and the environment, we would eventually lose other animals and beings within the ecosystem and food chain which will eventually lead to the extinction of humans (Bronnimann & Wintzer, 2019). Some practices to improve environmental empathy would be to educate people about the importance of every aspect of our ecosystem from the smallest organisms to the plants, to the small animals, all the way to humans (Bronnimann & Wintzer, 2019). Every living being is important and when situations happen to cause certain beings to become endangered or extinct, the rest of the ecosystem can become in danger of the same kind of fate. Climate empathy can be seen more in those that have a healthier outlook on life as well as middle class individuals. When a person is lower class, they are more focused on making sure they can afford everything they need, whereas middle class individuals can begin to focus on other aspects such as the environment and climate empathy (Bronnimann & Wintzer, 2019). When a person is thinking healthier such as enjoying outdoor activities, watching what kind of food they are consuming, and staying physically fit; they are more likely to have that additional outlook on the overall health of the planet and environment (Bronnimann & Wintzer, 2019). As a nurse, the best method for instilling climate and environment empathy is to educate the community and patients about how to care for themselves in every aspect of their life such as medical health, mental health, healthy nutrition, and how to understand the feelings of others.

As long as I can remember, empathy has been used in climate education. The earliest disaster I remember during my lifetime is the Exxon Valdez oil spill of 1989. I remember being bombarded with images of animals covered in oil from the spill. All of the adults in my life would comment about “those poor animals” every time. Public response to the Exxon Valdez was negative as a result of these images. This led to the near-immediate passage of the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 by the United States Congress, leading to sweeping changes in response and readiness for future oil disasters (Telsey, 2016).

If I were an educator, I would include emotional learning as a tool. As mentioned in this unit’s presentation, shifting self-focused behaviors to others-focused orientation is essential for success in environmental justice (Galen College of Nursing, n.d.).

Two scenarios I would use include images of wildlife from the aforementioned Exxon Valdez spill, and images of displaced people from Hurricane Katrina. If someone is not able to empathize with animals/wildlife, maybe the people who are displaced from a natural disaster will be a more effective example to reach them.

Cognitive empathy can help communicate the severity of climate change issues to people who may not yet understand the gravity of these issues. Exposing them to the plight of affected persons and beings and asking them to visualize themselves in a similar position may lead to motivation to improve.
