conducted?

the survey (e.g. individuals, households, etc.)?
c. What are the criteria for inclusion of subjects in the survey sample?
d. What groups/characteristics are excluded from the survey?
e. How was the survey questionnaire administered? Are there any situations in which

Q3. VARIABLES

Choose three (3) unrelated categorical variables in the survey. When choosing the three
variables, please keep adhere to the following guidelines:

o Do not choose variables that are derived from one another. To avoid doing this, it would
be advisable to select each of the three variables from different sections of the data set
or survey questionnaire (e.g. one from the group of demographic variables and the
other from two more focused areas of the data (e.g. work arrangements, health status,
etc.).

o Do not choose variables that are intended just for survey administration (e.g. case or
record id, survey weight (e.g. fweight, fweighta), date, etc.).

o Do not choose binary variables.
o The categorical variables you choose should have at least three response

categories that are meaningful.
o Meaningful categories do not include categories such as ‘not asked’, ‘missing’,

‘not answered’, ‘valid skip’, ‘refused’.
o If possible, please include at least one variable that relates to a person’s/household’s

employment or labour market activity (e.g. employment status, type of job, etc.).

For each of the three variables you have selected, answer the following questions:

a. Provide the name of the variable and its definition/description from SDA@CHASS
b. Are all respondents in the data asked the question associated with the variable? If not,

does the response to any other question(s) determine whether a respondent is asked
this particular question?

c. Could you suggest a different categorization for this variable than how the categories
are currently defined? Do you think there are other possible responses that have not
been included? (Please briefly (1-2 sentences) explain your answer)

d. Provide a simple summary (table) of the variable (e.g. number of responses in each
category) using the SDA@CHASS tool (you may insert a screenshot of your table into
your assignment document).

e. Based on the table you’ve provided:
i. Is the data for this variable cleaned or filtered in any way for coding errors or

clear misreporting?
ii. Comment on anything you find interesting about the data for the variable.

Q4. YOUR THOUGHTS

Did you find this survey to be interesting or potentially useful for your own analysis (in this or
any other course, in your work, personal interest, etc.)? Was there anything you expected to
see in the survey based on its title that you did not find? What else do you think could be
included in this survey to make it more complete? Any other feedback on this survey?
