Critical Thinking Response (CTR) #1: Implicit Association Test (IAT) & Reflection

The Implicit Association Test (IAT) measures the strength of associations between concepts (e.g., black people) and evaluations (e.g., good, bad) or stereotypes (e.g., athletic, clumsy). The main idea is that making a response is easier when closely related items share the same response key. The IAT may be especially interesting if it shows that you have an implicit bias that you did not already know about. For example, you may believe that women and men should be equally associated with science or political leadership, but your automatic associations could show that you (like many others) associate men with science and effective leadership more so than women. IATs help to uncover our implicit biases, even when we are not aware of them ourselves. They use response timing to measure how long you take to think about and make a move such as pressing a computer key. It generally takes more time if you want to make a move that is contrary to your implicit beliefs and attitudes because you pause to think about what the expected or socially appropriate answer would be.
In this assignment, you will discuss on your test results and produce a critical reflection that focuses on your implicit biases.

For your CTR #1, you will need to submit
3 items to Canvas:
1&2) Screenshots of your
two implicit awareness test results (2 images, 1 for each test)
3) Reflection response to the results of both tests (Word Doc or PDF)

2c) Hispanic American (‘Hispanic American – European American’ IAT).
When you complete the tests, take a
screenshot of the test results. This is proof that you took the test. If you forget to do this, you need to re-take the test to completion to be able to take another screenshot.
After having completed both tests, write a reflexive response that addresses both your test results. The response should be between 500 to 600 words (approximately two pages double spaced).
I want to encourage you to be honest and reflective in your responses. You will not be graded “objectively” on how non-racist you are, instead you are graded on reflecting about how these tests reveal something about you and your cultural environment. Remember that all humans have biases. Your results don’t mean that you are necessarily a bad person or that you are super-racist. They show to a large extent how you have been culturally conditioned and developmentally socialized by family, friends, institutions, society, and systems to hold certain beliefs and attitudes, which are often learned tacitly (i.e. not explicit instruction from parents or teachers, but things that you absorb from the environment like media representations or observations of social interactions). Racialized groups can internalize racism against their own group and typically have internal hierarchies.

Any rationalization you have for the difference between your expected and actual score.

What you interpret your score to mean, in terms of race and racism.

How your positionality (i.e., the social statuses you inhabit like race, gender, sexuality, class, nationality, etc.) impacts your beliefs and attitudes toward race and racism.

10 Points – Grading will be based on the completion of the tests and the thoughtfulness of your response.
Completion of a test is worth 2 points (1 point per test = 2 points).
