Identify and describe a health topic related to children and adolescents.

Reduce the proportion of children and adolescents with obesity: The prevalence of childhood obesity has risen substantially worldwide; in the U.S., a third of children are overweight or obese (Lobstein et al., 2015). Obesity is defined as a disorder of excess body fat. However, it is difficult to directly measure body fat, so it is often considered as increased BMI or body mass index. Children and adolescents with a BMI at or above their specific 95th percentile are considered obese (Reduce the Proportion of Children and Adolescents with Obesity — Data Methodology and Measurement – Healthy People 2030 | Health.Gov, n.d.). According to Healthy People 2030, data reviewed between 2017 and 2020 revealed that males had a higher rate of obesity, with the leading age group being 12-19 years. There are several evidence-based programs designed to address childhood obesity, including CHANGE, CHIP, and COPE, which look at factors such as nutritional intake, physical activity, and psychological factors that lead to obesity. 

How might you alter your teaching style to perform health promotion teaching to children and adolescents? How does this compare to teaching an adult?

It is important to tailor the content to the age group and cognitive development of the patient being educated. Using interactive methods such as games, storytelling, and visual aids can help engage younger children. By using simple concepts and incorporating activities, younger learners are likelier to engage in the lessons, making them more enjoyable and more understandable for the patient. Educators can use more in-depth discussions involving the consequences and long-term benefits of decisions when educating adults. In contrast, younger adults have a harder time conceptualizing the consequences of situations.

How do health promotion needs change across the lifespan?

Health promotion needs vary across different stages of life. Childhood goals focus on establishing healthy habits such as good nutrition and physical activity. Adolescents benefit from education on mental health awareness and how it relates to healthy decisions. Adult health promotion goals include the prevention of medical conditions and, as the patient ages, the management of developed conditions. One study shows the use of the 5A Model (assess, advise, agree, assist, and arrange) as a framework for clinical counseling, considering the demands of clinical settings across patients of all ages (Kris-Etherton et al., 2021).

Identify and describe a health topic related to children and adolescents.

A health topic that relates to children and adolescents is ADHD. Specifically when children and adolescents do not get the proper treatment needed. According to Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (n.d.), many of these children who do not receive proper treatment end up in trouble at school and home and have a higher rate of accidents leading to ER visits. Increasing education for parents and guardians can increase the compliance with medication and behavioral health therapy for these children and adolescents (Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, n.d.). 

How might you alter your teaching style to perform health promotion teaching to children and adolescents? How does this compare to teaching an adult?

When teaching children there are different styles that you use compared with adults. For younger children you can mimic what you are about to do on a doll. This allows for them to understand what is going to happen when you have to do the task on the child. This will allow for the child to also role play as the doctor to feel more comfortable with their surrounding and situation. For children you can use interactive play, visual aids, and age appropriate language. For adolescents it is best to use objects of interest such as games to help with their understanding. With adults we still use visual aids and age appropriate language. We also give educational brochures and written educational material which we do not give to children. 

How do health promotion needs change across the lifespan?

Health promotion needs change and evolve throughout the lifespan. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (2023), for children the focus is on their overall well-being and development. For adolescents we work to reduce risky behaviors such as alcohol and drug use. For adult, just managing life as it comes and reducing stress as much as possible. For older adults, focusing on maintaining the function they have left and monitoring them for any mental health disorders that could be caused by their decline in health (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2023).
