RESPONSE1

Describe the purpose of a group in which you were a participant.

I worked with the older generation to give them a sense of belonging.  The purpose of the group I worked with was to provide them with a quality of life.    Knowing someone in the nursing home cared for them meant the world to them.    I volunteered with the nursing home residents.  So many did not have any visitors or anyone to talk to.  I would give them a walking tour of the patio, play games, or pamper them.    It meant so much to them, making me feel good that I could help someone who needed it.  “Formed groups can be classified according to the purposes for which they are organized” (Toseland & Rivas, 2017).  The purpose was to have that sense of belonging and sharing with others in their community (Nursing Home).

Describe one positive and one negative characteristic of the group process that you learned from this group.

One positive thing about working with nursing home residents is that it is instantly gratifying.  The patient needs human contact and interaction.  They were so grateful for anything I did with them, even just sitting with them watching TV.  It does not take much to make someone have a great day.  The negative characteristic of the group process is I could not be up there as often as I wanted to.  They had to do without the times I could not come until I came the following week.

Explain how you determined that each aspect was either positive or negative.

The positive effect is the effect of the client once the activities are over.  They felt a sense of accomplishment—a sense of belonging.  You can tell by their behavior and their performance during the exercises.  It had a positive effect on the patient and me as well.  Activity promotes health as well.  “Compelling evidence links physical activity to positive health outcomes among both frail and healthy seniors” ( Benjamin et al., 2011).  The negative impact was the point of being consistent.  I was only there once a week.  The staff did not maintain the activities and the interaction with others of the like kind.  Consistency brings on a bond of unity with the patients in the facility.  If the staff could work on the activities during the week, it would not have an adverse effect.

RESPONSE2

· Describe the purpose of a group in which you were a participant.

I was a participant and a client within a group in an outpatient treatment program for six months. I had to learn different ways on how to heal and work on myself when it comes to depression, anxiety, and ptsd while others were there to recover from substance abuse. Another purpose of the group was to also complete activities that would help our families understand us better.

· Describe one positive and one negative characteristic of the group process that you learned from this group.

One negative characteristic of the group process was that most of us had a very negative outlook on the progress before we ever even started to complete any activity or group discussion. It took the first two weeks, but ultimately we learned that in order to be successful, it would help better to be more positive about things. A positive was that i understood more about myself and where my passion for wanting to help others comes from. I just needed to learn that I’m human and it’s ok to make mistakes.

· Explain how you determined that each aspect was either positive or negative.

I was able to determine that the aspects were negative because of how myself and the others in the group were acting prior to meeting our counselors. Everyone didn’t seem to be hopeful or in good spirits. Some of us were anxious, upset, or were reserved and not willing to participate. It was easier to live through the positive once we came out of our shell and gave each other a chance including the counselor’s. When you’re accomplishing something that is positive you feel like a huge weight has been lifted off your shoulders and you feel more at peace. By choosing to be negative, I feel that it would make me feel stuck, anxious, or guilty for not trying.
