His105: week 4 discussion | American history homework help

Part 1: Post a Response
Various reform groups with various causes developed in the US in the late 1800s and early 1900s; these are loosely called “Progressives” as they aimed to use government policies or science to improve and advance society. Also, this period was a time when the US started as a major player in international conflicts—first in the “Spanish American War and then in World War I. There were deep isolationist sentiments about such overseas entanglements, and President Wilson first has one position and then the other.

Choose and discuss (in a full paragraph or two) one of the following two topics related to the late 1800s and early 1900s.

  1. In the Progressive Era (roughly 1890–1920), multiple groups advocated for reforms in various aspects of government, society, and the economy. Discuss here the “muckrakers” and Taylor’s “scientific management”.
    • Explain briefly the approach and aim of the “muckrakers” and that of F. W. Taylor.
    • Compare their approaches and describe your feelings about them, and relate some modern situation that reminds you of one of these approaches and reform causes.
    • Identify the source(s) where you read about the reform cause.
  2. From the text, Wilson did not maintain his own campaign slogan (“He kept us out of war”).
    • Explain with some specifics why Wilson became pro-war. Describe your own feelings on that issue when you look back at it, and whether he was right to change.
    • Briefly, identify a similar international consideration today—or of the last 20 years, and what lesson might be drawn from the example in Wilson’s time.
    • Identify the source(s) where you read about Wilson.

Part 2: Respond to a Peer

Read a post by one of your peers and respond, making sure to extend the conversation by asking questions, offering rich ideas, or sharing personal connections.

Respond to Peer: Tyonna Lacy

President Woodrow Wilson was the 28th President of the United States of America. He served two terms from 1913 to 1921. During his run for re-election his campaign slogan was “He kept us out of war”. He remained neutral in World War I and declared the U.S. would have nothing to do with the war because, when he was a kid, he saw firsthand the upset of the Civil war and how the country had to rebuild during the reconstruction era. Also, at the time the majority of American did not want to go to war. It wasn’t until the Germans sunk American ships and killed thousands of passengers including Americans did Wilson decide that America needed to declare war on Germany. April 2,1917 President Wilson asked Congress to declare war against Germany. Senate passed 82-6 and the House passes 373-50 and America joined World War I. I believe that President Wilson was right to declare war on Germany. He had to protect and save America from being the Germans next target which clearly, they were attempting to cross the line. He proclaimed that America was going to join the WWI to protect the world and safe for democracy. And he was right.

Right now, unfortunately our international relations are not very good unless you count Russia and China. Most other countries (The United Nations) are not happy with the current person in charges decisions on removing the US from the Paris Agreement, and many other things. The one thing that the current person in charge could take from President Wilson would be take responsibility for all the people even when it goes against your personal feeling or beliefs. He saw the bigger picture, he didn’t even care for woman’s rights or child labor laws but he listened to the people and did what was needed for the US to prosper and sign in laws that bettered the lives of people.
