Instructions: Assignment: Rewrite the below lines (1557-68) of Heaney’s translation of Beowulf, conveying the same information but shifting the information around so it weighs differently on the grammar.  Rewrite it once for nouns and adjectives and rewrite it a second time for verbs and adverbs.

1557 Then he saw a blade that boded well,
1558 a sword in her armory, and ancient heirloom
1559 from the days of the giants, and ideal weapon,
1560 one that any warrior would envy,
1561 but so huge and heavy of itself,
1562 only Beowulf, could wield it in a battle.
1563 So the Shieldings’ hero hard-pressed and enraged,
1564 took a firm hold of the hilt and swung,
1565 the blade in an arc, a resolute blow
1566 that bit deep into her neck-bone
1567 and severed it entirely, toppling the doomed
1568 house of her flesh; she fell to the floor.
EXAMPLE:
12 Afterward a boy-child was born to shield.
13 a cub in the yard, a comfort sent
14 by God to that nation. He knew what they had tholed.
Example (lines 12-14) – rewritten with weight on verbs and adverbs: God comforted them and afterward Shield fathered one who boyishly played and prowled nearby.
Example (lines 12-14) – rewritten with the weight of meaning placed mostly on nouns and adjectives:  The late birth of a boy-child for Shield–a cub in the yard, a comfort from a compassionate God for that nation.
