Take any two finite/non-renewable resources and discuss ways to conserve them or promote their sustainable use. How do the effects of resource depletion intersect with socioeconomic status, gender, race/ethnicity, and health outcomes? Explain. Next, in what ways can nurses encourage sustainability in their personal and professional settings?

Two non-renewable resources would be coal and oil. Oil and coal are known as fossil fuels and these resources are heavily relied on by us humans for things like heating our homes, generating power plants, and gas for our vehicles. According to National Geographic, about 80% of the total amount of energy we use comes from fossil fuels (2023). The problem with using these natural resources is that, one there is limited supply and two is that burning these fossil fuels release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, which is the main cause of climate change. It is so important that we find alternative methods to using fossil fuels such as using solar or wind energy for powering every day items to decrease climate change.

The burning of fossil fuels can cause many issues, but for those who live in poor communities and communities that are close to the factories that burn fossil fuels are at higher risk due to the bad air quality. According to Princeton University, more than one million of African Americans live within about half a mile of fossil fuel burning facilities, and over one million are at high risk for cancer due to bad air quality (2020). With this exposure to air that is high in toxins such as carbon dioxide, methane gas, and other toxic chemicals, these people are higher risk for medical conditions such as asthma. About 13.6% of African American children suffer from asthma as compared to 7.3% of White American children (2020).

As nurses in our personal lives we can take action for preventing fossil fuel use by carpooling or investing in electric cars, use more solar or wind energy, and recycling. At work we can use more green cleaning products, recycle, not waste supplies and supporting waste reduction. We can teach others to participate in this effort as well, not a lot of people know about the health effects of climate change but as nurse we can do our best to teach those around us the importance of decreasing climate change to help increase health outcomes.

The most obvious way for me to reduce consumption would be to switch to an electric vehicle. I sacrifice gasoline consumption for my own comfort and convenience. I can justify this to myself because I live in an area with one public charging station. It is a lot easier to map out refueling stops on long trips because gas stations are so ubiquitous in our country. Although charging stations are increasing, they are not everywhere. I do not want to find myself low on charge in unfamiliar territory. Electric car mileage can decrease as much as 30% in extreme cold weather compared to a 15% degradation in gas engines (Krisher & Thiessen, 2023). Switching to electric vehicle would help conserve oil, which is a finite resource.

As a nurse (and in my personal life), I am watchful about waste. I only open supplies that I know I will be using. I do not over-order supplies to prevent having to dispose of expired stock. As a manager, I have the added reasoning of trying to stay within my budget regarding supplies. I try to instill resource conservation in my staff as well.
