The three animal sleep patterns that I chose to study were cows, sea otters, and penguins. I was interested in these three animals since they are some of my favorites, and I was interested to learn more about their sleeping habits. Cows had the most regular sleeping habits, they are diurnal, sleeping mostly during the nighttime, achieving only an hour at most of REM sleep during their sleep cycle, with most of their sleeping habits being drowsing or SWS. They typically lie down to go to sleep, and they’re only capable of dozing off while they’re standing up, not any deeper sleep. Sea otters were fairly interesting to study because they sleep both on land and in the water. They have shorter periods of sleep time than cows do, only about 7 hours compared to cow’s 11 hours total resting time, but their REM sleep cycle is significantly shorter. The longest period of REM sleep that was recorded in a study on sea otter’s sleeping patterns was 317 seconds. A majority of the rest of the sleeping time in SWS. I thought sea otters would be interesting to study because I knew that they liked to hold onto kelp or to other otters while they slept in the water in order to keep from drifting. Lastly, penguins had the most irregular sleep schedules. While their sleep schedules range from species and their size, small penguins were found to be nocturnal to avoid predators. Other species of penguins were neither nocturnal nor diurnal, sleeping for minutes at a time all throughout the day. This is mostly due to the fact that they are at high risk in their natural habitats. Because of this, penguins like to sleep in groups to keep watch over one another. Penguins can also achieve REM sleep, however, it makes up only 1% of their day.

I found three toed sloths can be diurnal and nocturnal and sleep for about 9 hours per day in the wild. Sea turtles are diurnal and rest for 11 hours however show nocturnal tendencies during egg laying season. Tree frogs are nocturnal but are still alert while they are sleeping to be cautious of predators.
