Malaysia was the first in Asia to introduce a comprehensive corporate governance code in 2000. Revisions were introduced in 2007 and 2011, giving Malaysia one of the most comprehensive set of corporate governance guidelines and rules. In 2017, Malaysia introduced the Malaysian Code of Corporate Governance of 2017 (MCCG 2017). This new code was described as, an important milestone in Malaysias continued journey in promoting good corporate governance to ensure the sustainability and resilience of the capital market. However, in the Transparency International Corruption Index, which measures corrupt practices in business in countries surveyed, Malaysia scores 49 out of 100. In the Transparency International Corruption Perception Index Malaysia is ranked 55 and Singapore our closest neighbour is ranked 7 in the World.
