Frederick McKinley Jones was born May 17, 1893 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Mr. Jones was raised in a biracial family. His mother left him as a very young child and it was up to his father to do the best he could to raise him on his own. His mother later died when he was 9 years old and Jones later dropped out of school. When Mr. Jones was 7 years old, his father could no longer raise him alone so he sent Frederick to live with a priest in Kentucky. After being sent to Kentucky Frederick’s father died two years later. When Frederick turned 11 years old he ran away and began to take care of himself as a child. It was very hard living because Mr. Jones had little to no education which made it hard for him to find a job. He went back to his hometown Cincinnati where he started looking for little small jobs to work just to be able to take care of himself. Mr. Jones lived a challenging childhood. He was forced to teach himself all about mechanics and engineering. By the time Frederick was 19 years old he had moved to Hallock, Minnesota, and that is where he began working on a farm doing mechanical work. Frederick worked so hard to be better at what he enjoyed doing so by the time he was 20 years old he had received his license as an engineer in the state of Minnesota. Frederick McKinley Jones invented the first automatic refrigeration system for 18 wheeler trucks that were used to preserve the freshness of food for a longer period of time. Mr. Jones also helped farmers and truckers to keep their food shipments from spoiling while transporting from place to place. Refrigerators and air conditioning systems were used to transport food, blood and medication to soldiers during World War II. Mr. Jones was a soldier himself in the U.S. Army during World War I. While in the U.S. Army he was asked to make repairs to different machines and other equipment used during the war. After the war ended Frederick Jones went back to working on the farm in Hallock, Minnesota where he was able to continue teaching himself different mechanical and now electronics. Mr. Jones worked for a doctor who began complaining about having to wait for his patients to come into his office to get an x-ray exam, that is when Jones created a portable x-ray machine that could be taken to the patients when needed. This was one of Mr. Jones’ invention that he never thought to apply for a patent for and that forced him to sit back and watch other inventors make lots of money off of their versions of the same device. Air conditioners were used to help keep the blood serum from spoiling. In 1944 Frederick McKinley Jones became the first African American elected to the American Society of Refrigeration Engineers. Mr. Jones later developed several devices for the Burgeoning Motion Picture industry; including an adaptor that allowed silent movie projectors to run the new “tallcie” films, and box-office ticket and change machines. After this invention Mr. Jones later sold the patent rights to RCA. In the 1930s Jones and his former boss together founded Thermo King Company in 1949, the company was earning 3 million a year. In 1991 President George H.W. Bush awarded Jones the Nation Medal of Technology. He was the first African American to receive this award, even though he wasn’t alive to receive the award. He was also inducted into the Minnesota Inventors Hall of Fame. Frederick McKinley Jones died on February 21, 1961 from lung cancer and before his death he had patented more than 60 inventions between 1919 and 1945.
