CLASSMATE’S DISCUSSION 1 (Sarah)

The three types of grants available are foundation, corporate, and government grants.  Foundation grants are one of the critical types of grants that are available to nonprofit organizations for additional funding (O’Neal-McElrath, 2019).  Private donations primarily support these grants and generally have a particular goal or type of project to be donated to (Daniel et al., 2006).  Corporate grants are funds set aside by for-profit companies to donate to nonprofits (University of Colorado, n.d.).  Some common categories of donations include children, health, elderly, homeless populations, and more.  These grants can also be set aside for specific interests and goals.  Government grants are funding for federal, state, and local projects that government officials set aside for specific goals (O’Neal-McElrath, 2019).  When a government grant program has funding available, a NOFA or Notice of Funding Availability will be advertised, and programs and nonprofit organizations can submit their grant proposal for that project.

The key to grant funding is a common goal and societal issue that both the grant providers and the potential grantees agree to address.  For example, I have previously applied for a simple grant to help continue to fund a food program for seniors in an affordable housing community.  We found a foundation that specifically looked for grantees that address the elderly population and food resources.  This was the perfect combination of what we needed funding for and the foundation’s purpose.  We were granted the $10,000 to continue the food program.  It is important to keep this in mind when applying for grants so the grant source and the nonprofit’s goals are the same.  If that is done, then the grants are more likely to be approved for funding.

CLASSMATE’S DISCUSSION 2 (Nancy)

Identify Three Types of Grant Money Sources and Summarize Why Foundations Award Grant Monies.

1.
Corporation: According to the article written by Paarlberg and others (2020), corporations tend to favor larger corporations that are successful. “As foundations are inherently dependent upon their guarantees for their mission accomplishment, they will likely choose to fund organizations that are perceived as highly successful (Pfeffer & Leong, 1977)”. (Paarlberg et al., 2020). However, while further reading I did come across a part where they mentioned it’s not so much the size of the corporation but rather networks that provide advantage. So, in other words, I’m thinking that a small corporation can receive a grant from corporations. This is interesting.

2.
Government: “Core funding for basic research in most developed nations is provided through national competitive grant programs, with overall budgets allocated by the government, and projects selected by semi-autonomous grant agencies, typically with annual application rounds and external expert assessors”. (Buckley, R. C. (2022). My understanding is that usually a government grant they say it’s a competitive grant which means that anyone who qualifies for this grant can apply for it. Once an organization is approved for this type of grant, they will not have to reapply for about a year or two or even more. However, once that grace period is over then again everyone can apply for this grant including the one who received it. If any of this makes sense.

3.
Foundation: “Private foundations as more sophisticated donors are likely to place less emphasis on the program ratio relative to individual donors for at least three reasons. The first reason they formally request charities to apply for grants and have better opportunities to informally request information during the grant process, both of which provide access to private charity financial and non-financial information that individual donors are unable to obtain. The second reason private foundations have greater expertise and experience is to see through any manipulation of the reported program ratio. And most importantly, foundations have greater expertise and resources to evaluate program results.”. (Allen et al, (2019).

After researching all three types of grant resources, my understanding is that they all have the same vision and mission. That is to provide the financial funds to a charitable organization whose vision and Mission align with their vision and Mission. These three grant funders are unable to reach those in need and for that reason, they are willing to provide grants to charitable organizations that can. For example, help with homelessness, child abuse, runaway teenagers, medical necessity to all minorities, assistance to senior citizens, helping people to enter the workforce, teaching English as a second language, and this is just a few of so many needs this world has.

As a grant writer having this information is essential and will help me prepare a grant proposal with the satisfaction of knowing that there is a better chance of getting it approved because I will make sure that the company, I am representing their vision and mission align with the one I am requesting the grant from. I’ve always said knowledge is a powerful thing and ignorance will get you nowhere.
