High school students, especially seniors, face a multifaceted challenge in the local community, contributing to chronically high dropout rates. This problem results from a serious lack of support for college readiness. There were two million status dropouts in 2021, who were 16 to 24 years old (National Center for Education Statistics, 2020). The figures stood at 5.2 percent in 2021, down from 8.3 percent in 2010 (National Center for Education Statistics, 2020). Alarmingly low rates of high school seniors enrolling in college are highlighted by local school district reports, which further highlight this issue. Given the overwhelming evidence of a serious problem inside the community, this urgent matter demands quick attention.
Seniors in high school are not the only ones that have this issue. A related problem affecting minority students in 10th grade is their underrepresentation in advanced STEM courses. School statistics support the low number of minority students enrolled in advanced STEM programs due to a lack of opportunities and resources. The effects go beyond the classroom, harming educational equity and lowering job opportunities for underrepresented groups. Addressing this discrepancy, encouraging diversity in STEM disciplines, and ensuring that minority students have equitable access to opportunities are crucial (Kricorian et al., 2020).
The community’s Hispanic 11th graders face unique problems, including high dropout rates. According to research, the scarce availability and low English proficiency rates among this set of students are attributable to language obstacles and a lack of English as a Second Language (ESL) programs (Harris, 2023). There are obvious signs of the effects, including low graduation rates and a sense of marginalization among Hispanic students. However, overcoming these challenges might have a big impact. It entails enhancing ESL programs, providing students with the support they require, enhancing English language competency, raising graduation rates, and enhancing students’ feelings of inclusion.
The significance of taking on these challenges cannot be disputed. Given the overwhelming evidence, something must be done to provide the neighborhood’s high school students with the resources, opportunities, and support they need to succeed. In the future, everyone in the community will be able to realize their full potential thanks to this.
