figurative language in our writing to help us evoke a particular
dominant impression. We can evoke a particular emotion, sense, memory, mood, or personality trait by using creative imagery.
In our descriptive essay, we will use examples of:

Let’s do some practice with each of these. For each emotion or character trait, try and come up with an example of each type of figurative language. Remember that your figurative language in your essay should not be “random,” and we don’t want creativity for creativity’s sake. There should be a point to your figurative language, meaning it should all work toward creating that dominant impression.

Writing exercise, Description and narration
The challenge in descriptive writing is to make your writing more concrete and more detailed. We can do this using four strategies:
1.
Use exact names. Don’t say, “my uncle.” Say, “Uncle Jimmy.” Don’t say, “I went to the restaurant” or, “we went out to eat.” Say, “I went to the Chili’s on Youree Drive.”
2.
Use lively verbs. Don’t say, “I went to school.” Say, “I drove to school,” or, “I sped down the highway to get to class on time.”
3.
Use plenty of adjectives. Don’t say, “My girlfriend came over in her car,” say, “My cute girlfriend Denise came over in her shiny new red Camaro.”
4.
Try and appeal to all five senses. Often we focus on how things look, but what did you hear? What did you feel, taste, or smell? “We walked into the smokey bar, and immediately my eyes started burning. I knew I’d never get that smell out of my clothes.”
Let’s practice.
1.
First, write a short paragraph describing a place you visit often. It could be a classroom, a workplace, a restaurant, a coffeehouse — anywhere! Describe the place in as much detail using the four strategies above. (USE Walmart on Mansfield Rd)
2.
Next, write a short paragraph that tells a story about a person you know. It can be anyone you know, a friend, a spouse, a coworker, a teacher, an archnemesis. Anyone! Again, try and use all four strategies.
