OL 665 Module One Journal Guidelines and Rubric
The journals in this course are private communications between you and the instructor. Approach your journals as an opportunity to reect on and apply what you learn each week from the
assigned readings, discussions, and activities. The journals are a chance to share your knowledge and expertise from your past educational and professional experiences. As a successful
professional, you will need good reection and writing skills. Journal assignments offer you the opportunity to further develop these skills. Each journal assignment is graded individually.
Overview
This course focuses on the business sector, commonly called charitable nonprots. These organizations are classied under Section 501(c)(3) of the IRS tax code. Do not use nonprots
categorized under other sections of the IRS tax code for your nal project assignment. Charitable nonprots:
Are exempt from federal income taxes.
Are allowed to accept tax-exempt contributions.
Have limits to lobbying activities.
Cannot use their funds to support candidates for public ofce.
You will study these organizations during this course. You will begin with the one you choose to use for your nal project.
You will look at all aspects of an organization as part of your strategic analysis for the nal project. You will interview an employee, manager, or key volunteer (such as a board member) of the
organization. You might even suggest a plan for making the organization more successful.
You need to identify a 501(c)(3) not-for-prot organization that you would like to study throughout the course to complete this journal assignment. Visit Candid.org (formerly Guidestar.org)
for help in selecting a not-for-prot organization.
If you would like to research a local not-for-prot organization, use your browser to search for your city and the words not-for-prot, nonprot, or volunteer opportunities. You should nd
several organizations to choose from.
Review the Final Project Guidelines and Rubric to ensure that there is enough information on the organization’s website to t the project requirements.
Prompt
In your journal assignment, complete the following tasks:
Identify the not-for-prot organization that you have chosen for your nal project.
Explain why you chose this not-for-prot organization. What appealed to you? Why is this organization a good candidate for the strategic analysis you will do for the nal project?
Conrm there is enough information available to address all milestones and the nal project. Verify that you have a way to interview an employee, manager, or key volunteer at the
organization.
What to Submit
Submit your assignment as a Word document with double spacing, 12-point Times New Roman font, and one-inch margins. These journal assignments should be at least 250 words in length.
