The small country of Luxembourg decided a few years ago that they wanted to become the leader in space mining. Now, space mining is many years away from being practical, but Luxembourg wanted to get started, and the country is offering incentives to companies to locate in Luxembourg. On the surface this may sound crazy; there is no way that firms relocating to Luxembourg will make any money in the short (and most likely mid) term. So what is in it for everyone? Well, the firm receives startup funding to initiate ‘space’ research, and Luxembourg gains the influx of highly educated people working on space research. There will be many innovations that this partnership will have that will create spin-off firms for products that can be used today, which in turn will increase the source of taxes for Luxembourg and revenue for the firms.
