SUGGEST: I encourage you to revisit Hatch and Hartline’s MTMDSS tier interventions in order to add a citation that would illustrate your example on bullying prevention efforts.

“Careful attention to legal and ethical issues relative to selecting, implementing, and evaluating is a key component of the intervention process… The major issues in this area include (1) intervention strategies, (2) intervention effectiveness, (3) possible undesirable side effects and outcomes, (4) parent involvement, (5) student involvement, (6) documentation, (7) evaluation, (8) consultant competence, and (9) provision for referral for additional services if interventions are unsuccessful.” (Burns, 2017) Some possible undesirable side effects and outcomes may be due to a too narrow focus on prioritizing one specific outcome, such as academic achievement, while neglecting other vital areas like social and emotional well-being, which can create an unbalanced and potentially harmful impact on student development. Also, focusing solely on desired outcomes without considering potential side effects like increased anxiety and reduced motivation leads to unintended negative impacts. The text mentions how groups can positively impact participants through encouragement, but unfortunately, it can involve peer pressure and harassment.

What do you consider the most important ethical consideration? Provide rationale for your position.

Documenting the intervention is important not only for monitoring the progress of the students being served but also in order to provide accountability data regarding the intervention assistance activities.” (Burns, 2017) Documentation provides a clear record of actions taken, decisions made, and outcomes achieved, creating a trail of accountability. This transparency safeguards against ethical lapses and protects both the student and the counselor in cases of concerns or allegations. For example, if the student’s parents are concerned about the intervention, the counselor can provide detailed documentation showing the chosen techniques’ rationale, implementation, and observed effects. This transparency fosters trust and ensures ethical practice.

Before implementing any intervention, obtaining consent from both the student and, if applicable, their parents or legal guardians is crucial. Informed consent ensures that all parties know the nature of the intervention, its potential outcomes, and their right to refuse or withdraw from the process.

For instance, if a school counselor decides to involve a student in a group counseling session to address social skills, obtaining informed consent involves explaining the purpose of the intervention, potential benefits, and any risks involved. This transparency empowers the student and their parents to make informed decisions about intervention participation.
