Examples of Vision Statements:

  • Alzheimer’s Association: A World without Alzheimer’s disease
  • Human Rights Campaign: A Hunger-Free America
  • Microsoft: A Computer on Every Desk and in Every Home

The vision statements express the aim and foundation of the company including the reason it was formed and what the organization aims to achieve. The statements are a sort of objective which is combined, meaning it is the ultimate aim of the organization to achieve it besides having other duties. The profitability or other individual gains by the organization are completely out of the picture and the statement portrays a society without the particular problem that the organizations are handling.  The vision statements meet the four components of an organizational vision which are the purpose, image, values, and goals. The purpose is the reason for the formulation and existence of the vision. It should be compelling and offer a desirable reason to ensure people commit and connect with it (Aithal, 2016). The image in the picture formed by the vision is everything goes as planned. It is the mental picture that is desired in the future by the organization, which keeps the different stakeholders motivated and making necessary sacrifices for the organization. The vision establishes the expected values and helps to recruit people suited for the organizational objectives (Hague, Angela & Lu Liu, 2016). The goals are the targets or milestone which act as guides to different stakeholders and help them remain focused on the accomplishment of the vision. The decision makers of the company have to ensure that all the choices made are complacent with the organization’s vision to ensure society and stakeholders are still confident and committed to the organization (Gurley, Gary, Loucrecia & Mathew, 2015). In the contemporary world, the meaning or purpose it the ultimate guide to organizational success and the vision provides the framework and lays expectations on how the organization should operate hence impacting strategic choices made.

Comcast

“Comcast’s culture is built on integrity and respect – with the goal of working together to drive ourselves and our businesses to always be creative, innovative and competitive. Our core values guide us day in and day out. We are guided by: An entrepreneurial spirit, Acting with integrity, Respect for each other, and Giving back to the community.” (Comcast, 2019)

Estee’ Lauder Companies

“We are a values-driven organization. Our actions are rooted in the Lauder Family values of respect for the individual, uncompromising ethics and integrity, generosity of spirit and fearless persistence. Building on these core values we also abide by the following principles:… Our Mission

Bringing the best to everyone we touch and being the best in everything we do.” (Estee’ Lauder Companies, 2019)

Sunrise Senior Living

“To champion quality of life for all seniors.” (Sunrise Senior Living, 2019) (Core values and principles of service are also listed on the website.)

These three vision statements all embody respect, integrity, family, and providing the best product for their consumers.  Organization vision is the perspective of the leader about what they want their organization to become (Coulter, 2013).  It is composed of four parts core values and beliefs, purpose of the organization, summary of what the organization does, and specify broad goals (Coulter, 2013).  The statement listed about contain all the components needed for an organization vison. For example, Comcast leadership wants to have a company rooted in integrity and respect and strives to be innovative and competitive while being guide by the values listed about.  Statements such as these affect strategy because leadership must align strategy with their vision.  If decisions are made that oppose the vision of the organization, it can result in the lost of trust from the consumer and employees.  Organizational vision also guides leadership in strategy. For example, one of Comcast values are giving back to the community. From this value, Comcast strategy includes Comcast Cares Day.  This is a day when, nationally, the organization does various volunteer projects with in the community to show that Comcast is not only providing a service but is also supporting community efforts.

When I look at all five of the suggestions listed in the discussion it makes me think about my leadership style. I always say your team makes you or breaks you as a leader. Keep it human as a leader is to me is making that connection with your employees. In some case your employees understand the job better than a leader and as a leader you should use this as an advantage. By talking with the and respecting them along with building relationships you will get the results. By talking to the employees, you will get the knowledge that they have along with the knowledge from the operating guides that the company has in place. Collecting artifacts is a tricky one if you do not know ow or if people decide not to give them up. For example, I had an employee that was the only one that knew how to order the syrup that we used for a soda machine. I was trying to get this information from him for months because I thought I need to know how to do this just in case something ever happens and he is not around. He did not want to give it up because he wanted to be the only one that knew. One day he decides that he will show me how to do it nd I document the whole process. I am sad to say that a week after he died in a car accident. It was a sad thing to happen, but it was weird that he decides to give up the information a week before. It was like if he felt that it was time to share this knowledge or artifact.

As a leader you cannot be insular or avoid contact with people. A person that does this in the business world means to me that they have no interest on the job or care for the employees. Their only focus is on themselves and their own career. What leaders like this do not understand that you need your employees to help you grow. Finally, as a leader you have always look for new things to help improve your business and not stick to this is how we have always done it. The world is changing every hour and technology is taking over. If you are not wiling to adapt to changes. Your business will not grow or improve. The strategic decision maker can also be the leader of the company. If the leader is not willing to make changes and listen. None of the plans put in place will work like they should.

Keeping the knowledge of human means that the decisions or practices of an organization’s management need to consider high moral standards, integrity, honesty, and authenticity. Keeping it human is in line with observing ethical and moral standards meaning that strategic decision makers have to consider ethical and moral values in their decisions whatsoever. Focusing on useful knowledge and know-how is essential in decision making both in life and organizational management. It involves evaluation of the available resources and determining the important or prioritization of a series of factors in line with the organizational objectives and vision. Decision makers have to use all the relevant information before making decisions mainly to reduce the risks and ensure that their decisions are at par with the expected outcomes.  Collecting artifacts can be understood as a figure of speech in management, meaning decision-makers need to find learn from past experiences of other people. Mistakes or success stories by other organizations are the artifacts and collecting them involves understanding what made the organization succeed or fail and subsequently deriving important decisions from them. Strategic decision makers will incorporate ideas that were successful in other prospects and avoid mistakes made by other organizations in their choices (North & Kumta, 2018). Avoiding insular and isolated focus is ideally appreciating diversity and focusing on management from a global perspective. The aspect of diversity in thinking is essential for strategic decision makers since it increases the areas from which they can draw learning experiences and make appropriate decisions from a multitude of concepts. Keeping knowledge afresh means continuous learning and adapting to the contemporary environment. The global environment is continually changing, and the only way for organizations and business to remain relevant s by adapting to the trends in their specific niches. Strategic decision makers have to ensure that their decisions are in line with the current trends, which requires them to keep their knowledge afresh.
