What are some of the “single stories” we have in our culture about LGBTQIA+ people in our culture? How did you learn these stories?

Some of the “single stories” I know are because I experienced them in high school with some of my friends going through that “face” as other people called it. Back then the first encounter that I had with the community and culture was not well seen and it was a scandal and parents, being an older generation, were not educated about sexual preferences.
Heterosexuality was and still is the preferred sexual orientation. There was no option for LGTBQIA+ it did not exist, no one in my community talked about it. It was the boys that had more trouble “come out of the closet” because the other boys would bully them because they were not “normal.”

Consider the last 2-3 movies or TV shows you have watched. How many LGBTQIA+ characters were represented in them? How were these characters portrayed compared to straight characters?

These are some of the movies and series I have watched that include LGBTQIA+ representation varies.

Atypical: In “Atypical,” there are LGBTQIA+ characters. Casey Gardner, one of the main characters, is a lesbian. Her storyline explores her experiences as a gay individual navigating high school and family dynamics. The portrayal of LGBTQIA+ characters in “Atypical” is thoughtful and aims to authentically represent their experiences. However, it’s important to note that while the show addresses LGBTQIA+ themes, it also delves into other aspects of the characters’ lives.

Elite: In “Elite,” LGBTQIA+ representation is prominent. Several characters identify as LGBTQIA+, including Ander, Omar, and Polo. The show delves into their experiences, relationships, and challenges, offering a multifaceted portrayal. “Elite” is recognized for its inclusive representation and has been praised for its honest and complex portrait of LGBTQIA+ characters.

Frida: In the movie “Frida,” Frida Kahlo, the central character, has relationships with both men and women. This aspect of her life is depicted in a way that aligns with her real-life experiences. The film offers a nuanced portrayal of Frida’s sexuality without sensationalizing it.

If you were a television or movie executive or director, how could you improve diversity in your industry? Why might this be important?

To enhance industry diversity, if I were a director, I would actively seek out underrepresented talent, both in front of and behind the camera. They should prioritize inclusive storytelling that reflects a variety of cultures, perspectives, and identities. Evidence that suggests television exposure is among the socialization agents that can influence audiences’ sexual attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors (Strasburger, 2012). Providing mentorship and training programs for emerging creators. This diversity is vital for fostering more authentic narratives that resonate.
