Task: Explain the term “New Media”
Preparation: New Media allows us to reconfigure the dimensions of our social relations. Consider the forms of New Media you use regularly. How have they altered the way you communicate with others, or any aspects of your working/social life? What new practices and behaviours have you learned? How are these integrated into existing media production processes and formats?
To competently complete this essay, participants will also need to address the relevant sections in their text and feedback throughout the tutorial sessions, plus any other appropriate research material.
Creative Arts and industries graduates are expected to have a high standard of written communication skills. This unit will place a premium on the quality of the written assessment work. Three elements will be particularly important:
• Text organisation – this includes essay structure, including reference list/bibliography and quality of argument.
• Content – including conceptual understanding and evidence of wide reading.
• Presentation – including ease of reading, editing, proof-reading, spelling, punctuation, grammar and consistent use of referencing.
• Students are encouraged to use the Harvard system of referencing.
Presentation: Assignments must be typed on A4 paper, using 12 pt font, double-spaced and printed on one side of the page only with a margin of 3 cm. All pages must be numbered, preferably with a Header/Footer with the student’s name and number.
The assignment should be securely bound by staples or other appropriate means, so that it can be easily read and marked. Please do not place essays in plastic binders.
Essays must be submitted in hardcopy only – essays submitted via e-mail will not be accepted. External students only will be allowed to submit their essays via e-mail attachment.
Assessment criteria: The essay will be assessed by the following criteria:
• The degree to which the student has convincingly addressed the essay question (30%)
• Presentation – including clarity of writing, grammar, consistent use of referencing and proof-reading and appropriate, logical organisation of the text (10%).
