Prospectus
The prospects provided by tapping biofuels as a source of alternative energy must be viewed as opportune in today’s context of environmental degradation that negatively tilts the balance of energy use and energy production. The argument that turning to green energy may be weakened because of the insufficiency of the natural resources we have left can be countered by saying that the rate of exhaustion of our natural resources could even be swifter if the predatory procedures in acquiring energy being done today continue. If we as development countries must turn to green energy, in particular to biofuels among other alternatives such as wind, solar or lithium energy, the reservoir of natural resources can have more time to regenerate. We can propose here that while we will gradually increase our reliance on and usage of alternative sources of energy. We can also work on the transferring of management of traditional sources such as fossils and coals from the private companies to governments who shall uphold the interest of the many. What this introductory paper is trying to evince is that the situation which the tapping of alternative energy is answering to is not a simplified one; it is connected to a host of other factors and contexts which involve the management of energy resources and their proper distribution among the billion inhabitants of the world. To sum up this introduction, the climate concerns and the worries over the sufficiency of the available energy sources can be addressed by wisely and unselfishly utilizing, managing and distributing the resources that we have today and plucking alternative sources with more discretion and collective decision-making. For the next part of this paper, I will elaborate on my position which involves the efforts to reduce carbon emission and production and instead turning them into a more systematic endeavor to find out and utilize alternative sources of energy such as biofuels that are still available. Their points can be summarized into three: (a) use of solar panels and activating biofuels as energy source and other ways of reducing carbon emission; (b) more energy efficiency programs and research; and (c) action and commitment of students towards environmental sustainability not just on campus but outside the university as well.
Alternative energy resources must be maximized in order to decrease our reliance on carbon and coal generation which is one of the more rapidly dwindling resources that the Earth has.
In the end, what the research will seek to accomplish is find out how the exploration of biofuels as source of alternative energy can be made more sustainable in order to genuinely answer the current crisis caused by reliance on carbon for energy supply.

In the case study “Success story: Chrome deposit corporation,” we can see the third green principle of engineering at work. This is something that can be used in tapping alternative energy as well. A number of practical ways affected by the company are revealed to minimize the consumption of energy. Moreover, this was done systematically. By “reducing compressed air pressure, installing covers on plant exhaust fans, installing condensate tank and pipes, analyzing flue gas air-fuel ratio” among others, energy consumption was decreased and optimize the use of materials. Another principle that this case was able to put into effect is the meeting of needs and the minimizations of excess, the eighth green principle of engineering. For instance, by maximizing the uses of water and preventing its excessive use that usually results to waste, the needs are met and not sacrificed while at the same time, hindering the occurrence of excessive use that fritters away the limited resources. This also yields to a more efficient productivity since all of the resources are properly used and made to contribute to the overall production of the company. This study has relevance to my own work because it elaborated the idea of green engineering which is a component of developing green energy. This effort to improve green energy can be used in addressing the problems posed by the severe status of climate change.
When it comes to the second case study, EcoWrox, Green Engineering Principles in Practice, we can see the sixth green principle of engineering at work. Complexity is conserved by ‘eliminating carpet tile waste’ which is governed and informed by the philosophy that ‘waste equals food.’ Following this, nothing is wasted and all the potential resources are put to use. Beneficial disposal is achieved and end-of-life scenarios are still turned to the advantage of the company’s production. Another principle obtained is the maximization of the mass, energy and time products when it comes to efficiency. In the context of EcoWorx, this is fulfilled by “formulating low molecular weight polyolefin’s with waxes, tackifiers” among others which greatly improve the procedures done in manufacturing and installation. The second principle is also achieved. With the philosophy of ‘waste equals food’ ensuring that C2C designs are cost-efficient and do not result to wastes in production, waste-generation is prevented. This paper also details some steps that can be taken in order to address climate change and improve the scheme of green energy. Drawing from the conclusions of this study can be beneficial in designing a framework for alternative energy activation, specifically that of biofuels.

For the second annotated bibliography, I will look into the paper made by Maria Virdis and Michael Rieber entitled “The Cost of Switching Electricity Generation from Coal to Nuclear Fuel.” The paper looks into the potential of substituting “nuclear power generation” for coal resources more permanently. This is mainly motivated by the trying energy crisis which has also spelled challenges to the environment and the swiftly depleting resources of the globe. The paper utilized the OECD method in order to test the applicability of using nuclear power resources to USA, arguably one of the more formidable sources of energy globally, after the former has succeeded relatively in Japan and Europe. I believe that this paper will be useful in my own research because it also touches on the issue of global warming and provides some insights on how this can be alleviated. The insights about tapping nuclear fuel can have parallelisms with the use of biofuels and as such can some input to my own study.

For the third source, I will use “our energy challenge” paper made by Bill Mckibben in his study for the use of energy in the world. The paper gives you statistics on energy use. For example, in November 2008, “ International energy agency estimated that production from the worlds mature oil fields was declining 6.7 percent a year, rate that is expected to get even worse over time”. That was in 2008 now we are at 2015 and it did became worse. this paper is credible National Geographic made these studies.” The energy information Administration, an arm of the U.S. government, forecast last year that, all things being equal, world energy consumption would increase 50 percent by 2030. That is a good round number, summing up the desire of people across the world for refrigerators, television, ice cubes, air conditioning in the tropics” the author used the information here to show how energy use and consume from here to 2030 is in increase by 50 percent. that helps my argument on how huge the world is using energy. This article credibility is strong because these statistics came from studies that has been confirmed before published from national geographic.

For my fourth source, this article that talks about how there might be other opportunities and challenges for a sustainable energy future. “ Access to clean, affordable and reliable energy has been a cornerstone of the worlds of the world’s increasing prosperity and economic growth since the beginning of the industrial revolution. Our use of energy in the twenty-first century must also be sustainable”. This paper uses a clean argument about how to maintain the use of energy responsibly. Also in this paper the author gives us information that will be used in my argument. For example, in nuclear power “ nuclear power can have an important role in efforts to decarbonize the production of electricity” this gives us that nuclear power can reduce the usage of electricity and the consumption of energy in the world.
